We are looking forward to an exciting year!
As you visit the library, you will notice that there are some changes coming about. Over the summer we have begun the renovation process of Curry Library, and have already received some new furniture and the start of a fresh coat of paint.
The new release rental books are now located within the Reference section, and there have been some additions to the Juvenile collection. The furniture has moved around somewhat in order to create better study areas. If you need assistance locating something, please let us know.
There have been some changes in staffing as well. In the last year we have regretfully said our goodbyes to Angela Stiffler, Kenette Harder, Virginia Hill, Hugh Stocks, and Suzanne Barrett, who have moved on to bigger and better opportunities. We are excited to welcome, however, our new Library Director, Stephanie DeClue. Mrs. Declue is joining us on September 14th from the State Fair Community College Library in Sedalia, Missouri. We look forward to having her with us!
As always, please feel free to contact us if you need any assistance with library services. Dr. Hugh Stocks retired on April 1st as Curry Library Director. Dr. Fulop is in the process of appointing a search committee for his replacement. Elise Fisher will be serving as Interim Director until a new director is hired. Progress will not stop during this transition period. The Curry Library staff are committed to continuing the level of service necessary to support the academic needs of William Jewell students and faculty.
This is an important time for Curry Library. We are beginning our evolution into a 21st Century library. A 21st Century library means a library that not only has books and other print materials, that part will not change, but extends itself into a collaborative learning environment. This new environment will enable students to learn in the manner that best suits their personal academic needs. In keeping with the mission of Curry Library, we will continue to provide the best in library services to the William Jewell academic community.

We hope you had a relaxing, fun Spring Break and are ready to tackle the rest of semester. Unfortunately, this year's travel may be limited to the trip back home. If that is the case, you may hear the unfinished project or soon to be started paper calling. But the truth is, most of us just want to put these tasks to the side for a week and truly take a break. But, you may ask, how can one take a break at home without being 'bored out of your gourd'?

Well, here is a practical suggestion on how to stretch and relax during the next week: Read for fun. Reading is a great way to travel a bit without spending a dime. A good book will transport you to whatever world you enjoy - fantasy, history, mystery, comedy - it is up to you.

So go ahead, take that break, at least for a little while and relax. There is an excellent strategy for obtaining reference sources that I would like to share.

I have a lot of people who come in the day before, or even a couple days before, a paper is due to find reference sources for their paper. Often this leads to frustration because although Curry Library has a very healthy collection of sources, one library cannot hold all the books, journals, and peer-reviewed papers that a person needs to write a good paper. I believe that no matter what kind of paper you are writing, a research paper, a position paper, etc., the quality of your paper depends a lot on the quality of your sources. There may be many articles or books that are specific to your paper and excellent sources, but you do not have time to wait for inter-library loan because your paper is due the next day or the next couple of days and you have waited until you are ready to start writing before you collect your sources. Unfortunately, this is not a good strategy. It is important to remember that although sources may arrive through inter-library loan in as little as one day, you must always be prepared to wait up to 10 days for inter-library loan.

Here is a strategy for writing an excellent paper with excellent sources:
1. As soon as you receive a prompt for a paper, begin to choose and narrow your topic.
2. Choose a thesis, and decide what position you want to take on the issue you have chosen.
3. Read your prompt again carefully, looking for guidelines on the types and number of sources that are required for your paper.
4. Take some time to come into the library and begin collecting your sources, including requesting documents or materials through inter-library loan.

This strategy does not take very much time, and if you have done steps 1 through 3 the collection and requesting of your reference sources will be fairly quick. Whether your paper is due in two weeks or two months, you should collect your sources as soon as possible. I know that everyone has a lot going on, and if you are like me, you work on your projects according to their due dates. However, I always collect my sources immediately after I have completed steps 1 through 3 above, preferrably shortly after I receive my prompt. This allows me to print out the full-text articles and check out books that are available through Curry Library. It also allows enough time to receive every book or article I would like to reference in my paper, even if I simply hold on to them until I am ready to begin writing my paper and even if I decide later that they are not pertinent.

I am always disappointed when I am asked by someone for help on finding reference sources only to find out that their paper is due before they have time to obtain inter-library loan materials. There have been many interesting topics which have excellent sources available, but often the person has waited too late to get the best sources. If you collect your sources early, and allow enough time for all your sources to become available, it will always result in a better paper.

This week, on Tuesday November 11th, we celebrated Veteran's Day. and I would like to share some information about this holiday with everyone.

Veterans Day, a holiday observed annually in the United States in honor of all those, living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who have died in wartime, Veterans Day honors all those who have served, in times of peace as well as in war.
Veterans Day is observed on November 11. The holiday was originally called Armistice Day, and it commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. Fighting stopped at 11 am, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

In 1919, on the first anniversary of the World War I armistice (truce), President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation expressing pride in the heroism of those who had died during the war. Business stopped for two minutes starting at 11 am, and it later became customary to observe two minutes of silence from 11 am. Many states made Armistice Day a state holiday in the 1920s and 1930s, and in 1938 the Congress of the United States declared it a federal holiday.

In 1954 the name of the holiday was changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor those who had served in World War II (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953). Today, the holiday honors all veterans. In 1968 Congress changed the date of the holiday to the fourth Monday in October to give Americans a three-day weekend. But because of the significance of November 11 to many people, the traditional date was restored by law in 1978.

If you know a Veteran, please be sure to acknowledge their heroic service to our great country today. Because of their sacrifice, we are able to enjoy our freedoms today as Americans in a Democratic society.

TODAY IS ELECTION DAY - PLEASE GO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE!
This election will be a day in history that each one of us can be a part of, no matter what the outcome. I am always excited to learn something new, and share the knowledge with others, and these are some things I never knew:

Agatha Christie's fictional character Hercule Poirot is the only fictional character ever to be honored with an obituary on the front page of The New York Times.

Agatha Christie is the top-selling English-language author of all time. She wrote 78 mystery novels that have sold an estimated 2,000,000,000 copies.

Author Dr. Seuss wrote the book "Green Eggs and Ham" because the editor made him a bet that he could not write a book, which contained less than fifty words.

During his entire lifetime, Herman Melville's timeless classic of the sea, "Moby Dick," sold only 3,715 copies.

Ernest Vincent Wright wrote a fifty thousand-word novel, "Gadsby," without any word containing the letter "e."

General Lew Wallace's best seller Ben Hur was the first work of fiction to be blessed by a pope.

George Orwell's book "Animal Farm" was turned down many times by different publishers. One of them actually said, "it was impossible to sell animal stories in the U.S.A."

In 1998, Ten Speed Press publishing company published a book, "The Eat A Bug Cookbook" by David George Gordon that contains over 33 bug recipes.

Keeping Warm With an Axe, is the title of a real how-to book.

The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. has the world's largest collection of comic books with over 5,000 titles and 100,000 issues.

The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

Shakespeare used around 29,000 different words in his plays. About 10,000 of those words had never previously been used in any surviving English literature. Around 6,000 words only appear once.

The Guinness Book of World Records, first published in 1955, got into itself nineteen years later, in 1974, by setting a record as the fastest-selling book in the world.

Emily Dickinson wrote over 1,800 poems. Only seven were published in her lifetime, all without her consent.

Sources Cited:
http://www.interesting-facts.net/
http://www.dysan.net/weird/show/646.html
http://www.sentex.net/~ajy/facts/literature.html

Dr. Niall Ferguson is the guest speaker for the Hall Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture on October 16th at 7:30 p.m. His topic will be "Sinking Globalization: What Could Go Wrong?" EReserve is a collection of PDF documents that are made available to students by the professors. The professor can upload an article or other material to EReserve through Curry Library. Here is the process to access these documents:

To access this material, you will go to Curry Library's home page online, and click on "EReserve" under "Quick Links." This will take you to the EReserve log-in page.

Once you are on the page, you will click on "the "Electronic Reserves and Reserves Pages" link. It will take a few seconds for the pages to load.

Once the page has loaded, you can search by "course page," or choose by "Department," or "Instructor." I have generally found that browsing by Department is the easiest.

When you have found the course you are looking for, click on the course link under "Course Number." At this time, it will ask you for your password. The password is always the current semester abbreviation followed by the last two digits of the year. For example, the password to access documents in this semester would be FA08, for Fall of 2008.

These documents are in PDF format, and you will be able to open and print the document. Adobe Acrobat Reader is available in a free download at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html if you do not currently have the software loaded on your computer.

Then click on the "Accept" button, and the list of EReserve documents for the course selected will be listed. Click on the document you would like to open, and the dialog box will open asking you whether you would like to open or save the document. If you only want to print the document, I recommend clicking "Open," if you want to save the document, save it and you can open it from your computer later on.

You can access these documents from any computer, you do not have to be on a Curry Library computer or even the Jewell network. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact us for help!

We have new bestsellers!

Curry Library contracts with a company to "rent" newly released books for our Jewell faculty and students. The new books are rotated through our library about every three months, and can be checked out for the same amount of time as books in our regular collection. Some of the authors include Keith Olbermann, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Janet Evanovich, Karl Rove, James Patterson, and Kurt Vonnegut. For all you Vonnegut fans out there, the new Vonnegut book is called "Armageddon in Retrospect" and is a collection of previously unpublished stories, published just this year. So if there is a newly released bestseller on your reading list, make sure you check out our new book section to the left of the front doors. We may just have what you're looking for.

We also have a new book section that Curry Library has purchased, which is located behind the information desk. When Curry Library purchases a new book, it is shelved in the New Books section until it is incorporated into our main collection. This section has many newly released books and bestsellers. There are a lot of interesting new titles, such as Theories of Everything, Arab Comic Strips, and What's so great about Christianity, as well as others that are sure to spark your interest. If you have not had the opportunity to utilize these resources, I would like to talk about a few basics.

First, a database is a collection of data that is compiled, organized, and is usually searchable. Curry Library subscribes to companies who have collected the data and created a database for research purposes. This data includes full-text citations, magazine articles, journal articles, book excerps, newspaper articles, and abstracts, to name a few. What the company has done is taken a number of these resources and electronically formatted them for viewing online.

For example, if you wanted to look up articles on John Stuart Mill you could search through JSTOR (a literature-oriented database), which is one of the databases we subscribe to. It will return approximately 3500 articles about or referring to John Stuart Mill. If you would like to narrow the field further, you could modify the search to include On Liberty. This narrows the results to around 1350 articles. Then maybe you want to write a paper that specifically examines Mill and minority rights , so you add "minority rights" to the search and it returns around 300 articles. Truly amazing.

Curry Library currently subscribes to 85 databases, the results above were just from one. The articles are peer-reviewed, which means they are considered to be reliable sources. So the next time your instructor informs you that you have to have x number of reliable sources, you can feel confident that you will have no further to look than your library's databases.

As always, if you would like help on the databases or have any questions, you can always come to the library information desk or email libinfo@william.jewell.edu.

This week I would like to point out the copy services the library has to offer. Copies are 10 cents each, but if you buy a copy card you can get 100 copies for only $5.00. At 5 cents a copy this is a very good deal. Copy services do not have to be used solely for your academic work, you may use the copiers for any of your copying needs. The copy room is located to the right of the circulation desk, and if you have any questions, someone will be happy to help you.

I would also like to encourage everyone to attend the learning sessions that Elise Fisher, our Reference Librarian, is holding in the library. Please sign up early by coming to the library or send an email to fishere@william.jewell.edu prior to the day of the class, and come learn how to make your academic work shine!

Remaining sessions:
Session 2 – Print or Online materials (Week of Sept 22)
J period Tuesday 9 – 9:50 or Thursday 10 -10:50
or L period Tuesday or Thursday 2-3:00

Session 3 – Efficient Searching Techniques (Week of Oct. 13)
J period Tuesday 9 – 9:50 or Thursday 10 -10:50
or L period Tuesday or Thursday 2-3:00

Session 4 – Ethical use of Information (Week of Oct. 27)
K period Tuesday or Thursday

NOTE: Sessions 2 and 3 will be held in Marston 306, session 4 will be held in Curry Library.

We hope everyone's classes are going well so far! There is a link called "View Your Library Account." If you click on this link, it will take you to a log-in page, where you will enter your first and last name. Your password is your full social security number followed by "wj".

From your account, you can see what materials you have checked out, and renew them online!
You can also view the materials that you have requested through inter-library loan, and see the status of your request. "Mobius Request" means your request is still being processed, and "In Transit" means that your material will be in soon.

You can also search the catalog after logging into your account, and save the search. This is an excellent tool if you know you will be doing a lot of research on a specific subject, or maybe you have a favorite author or topic that you check out on a regular basis.

We are always happy to help with any questions you may have. Starting immediately, anyone at your institution can sign up for this popular e-mail newsletter, which summarizes the latest news in higher education and provides links to the complete news articles posted on The Chronicle's Web site every day.

The daily briefing also summarizes the news, career advice, and essays published in the current issue of The Chronicle's print edition and provides links to the full text of each week's issue on our Web site.

Signing up is simple. Here are instructions that anyone on your campus can use:

* Go to https://chronicle.com/services/?slm to create a free
Chronicle account, or log in if you already have an account.

* Choose the format in which you want to receive Academe
Today--either HTML or plain text.

* Once you have confirmed your e-mail address, you'll receive your
own copy of Academe Today the next weekday morning (Eastern Time).

When you sign up for Academe Today, you can also subscribe to other free Chronicle e-mail newsletters. A list of our e-mail newsletters is available at http://chronicle.com/help/emails/?slm
As you know, the full online text of the Chronicle of Higher Education is already available, either from campus computers or from other locations, through the Curry Library website. Access to the daily email update has previously only been available to individual subscribers; this change, making it available to all, provides greater opportunity to keep on top of news from the higher education community.

Holocaust Remembrance

We hope everyone will come to the library to view the touching photographs commemorating the history of the Warsaw Ghetto from its establishment in 1940 to its destruction and the final deportation of its inhabitants in 1943.
